Ayurveda literally means the science of life.  Not only does it teach the herbal treatments and lifestyle practices to help the physical body, it also treats the mind and spirit at higher levels. The Vedic sciences as a whole is about vairous of life and living as a spiritual being that is part of the universe. Having said that, Ayurveda approaches the art of healing at an integrated level. This article will address 5 lifestyle practices for success discussed at an integrated level.

Some lifestyle practices that are taught based on the Vedic philosophy can seem simple but they are very effective because the reasons are derived from a higher perspective. Daily recommended lifestyles can help you work with the universal energies rather than feeling like you are swimming against the currents. The secret is that the Vedas contain the knowledge of the cosmos and how everything works together in unison.

At just a human level, all we see is the immediate environment and the daily routine that we follow. Getting up in the morning, going to work, coming back home, dinner and sleeping is the usual cup of tea. Unseen forces work behind the scenes in the form of planetary influences, lunar cycles and solar cycles, cosmic energies and other phenomenon that can be good or bad.

1. Brahma Muhurta

Brahma Muhurta (time of Brahma) is the ideal time to wake up according to the Vedas. The Vedic day is divided into 30 parts. Brahma muhurta is the time that falls into 45 minutes before sunrise. This time is consistent in tropical countries as the sunrise and sunset is set so usually 5 am is the ideal time, although many yogis and Vedic spiritualists tend to wake up earlier.

In Ayruvedic terms, this is the time of Vata or air dosha. That means there is movement, agility and sharp cognition, which are higher Vata qualities, at play. Waking up at this time allows the body to have more energy and movement throughout the day as Vata allows good movement. The benefits include good mental clarity and kick-starting the proper body functions, including the digestive tract, for the day.

The exact time of sunrise is Pitta and will give a more passionate and aggressive attitude throughout the day. After sunrise is Kapha time, through which there will be inclination to be lethargic. That means slow thinking, slow body function and slow digestion. There will be more phlegm and mucus formation as well as toxin or Ama build up due to slowed metabolism.

This is the time before everyone and everything else wakes up. The quiet time allows time for meditation, mantra and prayer. In other words, you get to begin your day calm and collect instead of rushing off to work. This sets a pace of being on time reducing the stress and giving the mind the sense that there is plenty of time. Concentration level will be enhanced and sharp throughout the day because the day started as out calm and collected.

brahmamuhurta

By doing this as a daily practice, the mind gets used to the calmness and a sense of well being. When you rush to work since you woke up late, the rest of the day tend to flow that way. There is absentmindedness and stress that disrupts the body’s natural rhythm. Meals may not be taken on time, disrupting the body’s digestive cycles.

Waking up early, sets the time for the day, gives the body time to slowly wake up and function right. This simple habit helps your mind to feel like there is a lot of time and a lot can get done. As mind the root of disease, keeping the mind clear and positive keeps one healthy

2. Sleeping Early

Sleeping early around 10 or at least before 11 pm is very healthy for the body. To start with, it helps the body, especially the organs, to get plenty of rest time. 10 pm is the ideal time that the body seeks rest after a long day of hard work. Sleeping after midnight and, most of all, pulling all nighters highly strains the body. This may not be so apparent at first, but it does catch up later on. Another fact is the excess coffee drinking that tricks the brain to think that there is a lot of energy although the body is actually tired. These type of things disrupt the body rhythm.

By forcing the body to stay awake instead of allowing rest, you are changing the biorhythm to work differently and against its own nature. This can backfire later on in life in the form of diseases. For example, the heart is the most hardest working organ in the body. When you push your body to stay awake longer, the heart is not able to slow down and rest. Overtime the wear and tear starts to show as blood pressure, diabetes or heart problems, for example.

Sleeping-early

Stress caused to the body is the biggest cause of body deteriorating as it begins the slow wear and tear of the body. With the modern lifestyles, there are higher number of people having health issues at a younger age than ever before.

The body needs attention and care. It naturally will let you know when its hungry or tired. By ignoring these signals, you are re-training the body to not signal you. When your car indicates that gas is low or oil needs to be changed, ignoring that would lead to the depreciation of the car faster. The same theory applies to the body.

3. Eating Consciously

Eating consciously is eating the right diet, eating on time and eating the right way. The body and mind likes routine. The consistency provides with stability that there is nothing to fear. Fear switches on the stress mode that disrupts eating habits, digestion, sleep habits and inner peace. Eating consciously is a lifestyle practice that can be like a treat to the body and mind.

Conscious eating is about preparing a good, healthy meal with good intentions and love. Your energy goes into your food as you prepare it. Second one is to give thanks for the food before eating. This helps to practice the art of gratitude that brings more blessings into your life. The third part is to eat without distractions. By giving food your full attention, you are aware of what goes into your body. The colors and smells awaken the appetite and the body prepares for the digestion. This allows the senses to be engaged in the eating process, engaging the body as a whole for the complete digestion of food.

Eating-Consciously

Eating consciously is an experience. The calmness and ritualistic aspect of this process helps the body to relax and integrate the food, its nutrients and the experience through the five senses. The attention you give will bring a higher vibration and happiness as you see the vibrant colors, smell the wonderful aroma, touch the texture with your hands, hear the sounds and taste the food.

The food digestion starts in the mouth and then goes to your stomach. Conscious eating can give a chance to chew the food well to aid digestion. This form of appreciation and love you give your body will help to remain healthy and attract good vibes.

4. Meditation, Mantra & Prayer

Meditation, mantra and prayer is a way of collecting the mind. The focus, while engaging in these activities, become very strong. The intentions you make or thoughts you have at that time can attract and manifest at an amplified rate as you transcend to a higher consciousness while engaging in meditation, mantra and prayer.

Prayer-mantra-and-meditation

Inner peace gets lost due to the chaos that goes around in our living environments. Most people are not properly grounded that makes it difficult for them to focus well on one task. Meditation, mantra and prayer helps to ground the root chakra (Muladhara) to give a sense of stability and trust. When the scattered energy becomes centered, working with the universal energies becomes easier, including becoming more intuitive.

This step can assist in reducing stress as it balances the energies of the body, mind and spirit. With a calmer outlook, much more can be achieved in life. We are able to see the opportunities coming, use the intuition to make the best decision and use the heart space to genuinely feel what is in-line with our highest happiness.

5. Exercise

The human body is created to do great amount of physical work up to many hours a day. Back in the day, the humans had to walk for long distances to look for food, shelter and other needs as well as doing strenuous physical work such as farming and building. The human body had to be evolved to handle these situations as much of the work was done outside.

In modern times, most of the work is done sitting in front of a computer or in an office. This sitting position is not normal or comfortable as the actual normal sitting positions are the floor positions. Chairs are a recent addition. With that in mind, there is a need for the body to have movement for the energy to flow throughout constantly. It is highly recommended in office ergonomics to get up and move around every hour because of this reason.

exercise

Exercise takes care of the need to work the muscles and move. Yoga asanas are especially good at helping to keep the muscles fit and helping the subtle energy flow. This energy flow is what keeps the health of the body as it brings in new and fresh energy or Prana and removes old, stagnant energy. When muscle movement is restricted or limited, there is a chance for the body to be rigid, causing health issues later on in life.

The other factor to consider is slowing down of the metabolism with less time spent on exercising. As a result, there may be weight gains, especially if the lifestyle includes excessive consumption of food than the body requires. Extra weight is another contributing factor to disease.

6. Working with Earth Cycles

Working with Earth cycles is about paying attention to the moon cycle, the sun cycle, the seasons, the times of the day, etc. to harmonize with their energies. Nature is like clockwork with different species coming at different times to feed while other species go to sleep. For example, birds go home at sunset to sleep and wake up around sunrise to start the day.

Humans also have been adhering to those natural cycles for thousands of years, though many individuals may not be aware of it at this present time. The human body also contains a biological clock that is in sync with Earth energies, planetary energies and the cosmic energies. When there is a new or a full moon, subconsciously we know it and feel it. Each new or full moon there are things starting or ending in our life according to the zodiac placement of the moon.

Earth-cycles

The planetary influences and transits are referenced on daily events and for doing new things at auspicious times. There are times when the energies and planets are in perfect alignment and other times when it is not the best time to do anything. There are galactic cycles that influences the galaxy as a whole. There is sunrise, noon, sunset that prompts us to take action like wake up, eat and rest.

Working with cycles and paying attention to them can help with tuning into your body and the environment more. This helps to lessen stress, give us an inclination of what to expect in the future, and avoid accidents or calamities. Nature and its order provides much insight about how to work with these energies to be in motion to the rhythm of the universe.
